What happens to your recycling and household rubbish

Garden waste (brown-lidded bin)

We collect this in freighters, and take it to be composted in the borough.

The garden waste is chopped up and put into long heaps which are turned and mixed regularly to make sure everything breaks down evenly. It’s very like composting at home, but on a much bigger scale. The fibrous material is very like home compost, and is spread on farmland to improve productivity. It can be sieved, with the finer material used in horticulture to replace precious resources like peat.
