What happens to your recycling and household rubbish

Glass bottles and jars

We collect these mixed together with plastic, cans and tins in the bigger side of our recycling freighters. They are sorted at a materials recovery facility (MRF).

Glass bottles and jars are washed, crushed, melted and moulded into new glass bottles and jars. As the main ingredient in glass is sand, some recycled glass is ground down and used to make things like roads and construction materials.

Without recycling, more sand would be taken from underground to make these things.
