The settlement hierarchy is a key element of the spatial strategy for the local plan and provides an organisational structure to the service centres in Newcastle under Lyme. The identification of a hierarchy of centres ensures that any new development is focused in the most sustainable locations for growth and is proportionate to the level of service provision that each centre provides.
